Dedicated Server Crashes

Hey guys!

First of all i have to say: kick ass campaign! The big downside so far is that i've got lots of crashes and wasen't able to play one full game on a ded server without a crash. It is a lot better on Windows ded servers and about three times as bad on Linux.

I did try to play it on my own servers first, then on some UK based but sadly it is always the same, ... connection timeout and back to the lobby at some point. Would be great if you guys could look into that problem.

Re: Dedicated Server Crashes

I experiencing similar behavior on my Linux based dedicated servers. On these servers, there is no addon but custom maps.

At some random points during the campaign all players were kicked back to windows desktop, at the same time apparently (I was not playing at that time so I do not know precisely).

Anyway I have a question: somewhere in the installation process you suggest to disable other campaigns. This is a client-side action. Is it also a "server-side" recommendation, i.e. remove any other .VPK files from the addons server directory?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

I don't know how to help you guys, but I'm trying to bring our playtesters/server admins here.

Re: Dedicated Server Crashes

I remove most of the custom maps already installed on my server and apparently, it is working better now.

I removed these maps:
2019
4 below
Daarkblood3_V3
Deathaboard2
Deathtripv4
Fanfeast
Hallowedwinter

Re: Dedicated Server Crashes

Strange, when you say 'most', does it mean 'the majority' or 'some of them'? And when you say 'it is working better', does it mean 'it is working well now' or 'the problem does not occur as often as before'?

Re: Dedicated Server Crashes

"Most" because I let some other campaigns installed (Dead Before Dawn, One 4 Nine, Deadly Dispatch, Detour Ahead, HelmDeeps Reborn).

"Is is working better" because people do not reported any other reboot but as it was random I'm still not sure it is completely ok.

Re: Dedicated Server Crashes

With or without other custom maps or campaigns servers still got a major problem. My guess was the last two l4d2 updates short time before IHM was released did change some details for the game/server and was therefore not yet known. So far two weeks later ... any ideas how to run it stable on ded servers, both Linux and Windows?

Or let me ask this way: Anyone got a stable l4d2 ded server running IHM 1.2?

Re: Dedicated Server Crashes

Are you sure the "IHM - map1ForestCanyon" is the thing that triggers the issue or is it just a guess? Is it reproducible?

Re: Dedicated Server Crashes

I left a message to Marc, we'll see what he can do and if he can reproduce it on his end.

Re: Dedicated Server Crashes

Well, at least that's what happens on my servers, can't tell if everyone has the same issues as i have

And of course, now that I want to record it, my server doesn't crash... stupid Murphy's law.

Re: Dedicated Server Crashes

Thank for your feedback. We have now an idea of the source of this issue.

Next week I'll work on the 1.3 version wink

Re: Dedicated Server Crashes

Not sure if this will help with debugging but we can play Mountains on our server as long as at the start of map 1 we take the path to the right. Sometimes we have to keep restarting the game as the dynamic pathway blocks it with fallen trees. If we take the left route from the start the game always crashes.

Great map btw. Loved it in L4D1 and so glad you released it for L4D2, thank you.
